Bans and AI literacy

Bans on unacceptable AI use and AI-literacy duties (Art. 4) took effect.

2 Aug 2025

General-purpose AI (GPAI)

IN FORCE

Obligations for providers of general-purpose AI models took effect.

2 Aug 2026

Transparency (Art. 50)

FROM AUG 2026

Businesses must disclose when someone is interacting with an AI system, and label AI-generated content.

2 Dec 2027

High-risk systems (Annex III)

UPCOMING

Obligations for stand-alone high-risk AI (e.g. recruitment, credit scoring), deferred to December 2027.

2 Aug 2028

AI in regulated products (Annex I)

UPCOMING

Obligations for AI embedded in regulated products, medical devices, machinery and vehicles.
